ARTIST

Xu Ge

Born in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province in 1983, he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the China Academy of Art.

In 2008, he went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy as an exchange student. Since 2010, he has been teaching at the Department of Public Space Art of China Academy of Art. In 2017, he went to the School of Mechanical Engineering of Zhejiang University as a visiting scholar.

Xu Ge's work stems from his fascination with science, especially mechanics, physics, and electronic control. Deeply influenced by the classical art of automata in Europe, the way machines move, the sounds they make, and the inner poetry are some of the aspects he focuses on. When machines are stripped of their functionality, the mechanisms within them that generate motion and mimic life become a source of fascination. In recent years, with the intervention of scientific and technological media like sound and light and the popularization of modern control technology, he began to try to create a series of dynamic, rigorous but full of warmth scientific and technological artistic expression in the context of public art. The intervention of dynamic changes makes the originally static plastic art produce infinite duration in time dimension.
