Fang Baiqin

The ceramic utensils I created not only express a particular viewpoint of the physical world but also put essential functional purposes into practice.
I see both natural and man-made objects as elements which construct the environment in which organisms live. Contrasting elements such as regularity and irregularity, organic and geometric, which reference man-made and natural concepts which are selected from personal experiences of my immediate environment such as buildings, tram systems and the natural landscape.
Based on the intention of representing the living world, I have tried to use my works referencing the ambiguity of contemporary functional ceramics I feel in recent years. It has been struggling between nature of craft tradition and concept expression of modern art. I aim to synthesize the sculptural spirit into functional pottery in visual aspect and also connect people with an understanding of this concept through their usage of the utensils.
As objects made of natural substances, shaped by the artist, ceramics are ideally placed to express this relatedness when employed as functional objects.
